"Higher Calling"

July 22, 2009

Just what exactly is the "higher calling" as Gov. Panlilio mentioned in the news?

This is not to react to his statement, but the "higher calling" is a highly theological concept that demands reflection. For there is no hierarchy of vocations, nor a civil position definitely be regarded as "higher" than an ecclesiastical position?

What exactly is the "higher calling"? This could be a prelude to opening one's heart to the call of the Divine Master to do His will and to pattern one's life after Him. Whether it be a street cleaner or a manager in a bank, as long as one knows it is God's calling, then he freely responds to the way of life.

There are three states as taught by the Church, each equally important based on the charism given to each of us by the Holy Spirit. These are the single-blessed life, the married life, and the priesthood. There could not be any calling higher than these because these are where God calls us to live a life of holiness and martyrdom.

How do we respond to God? This is our higher call. What do you think?
